Put the cylinder on the tray and pour the hydrogen peroxide into the cylinder
Pour in the dish soap.
Add several drops of food coloring.
Mix the yeast with the warm water for at least 30 seconds.
Pour the yeast into the cylinder and watch the reaction happen!
Science Behind It
Hydrogen peroxide is made of water and oxygen. The yeast contains an enzyme called catalase. When you add the yeast to the hydrogen peroxide, catalase rapidly separates the oxygen and water molecules in hydrogen peroxide. This is an exothermic reaction, meaning that when the foam was made, heat was also produced. The separated oxygen is then trapped in the dish soap, which creates the foam.
Tips
Don’t touch the elephant toothpaste for several minutes as it is an exothermic reaction and will be hot. Using more than one color of food coloring will just turn it gray, so only use one color. This mixture is also safe to pour down the drain when you are done.
