Fill each cup with water and put different colors of food coloring into each one.
Using your scissors, cut the stem of the rose lengthwise into strips to match the amount of cups of food coloring.
Put each strip of the flower into each of the different cups and let sit overnight.
In the morning you should see that the rose has changed colors to match the color that was in the water.
Science Behind It
Plants gets the nutrients they need from the soil via their roots and stem. The same thing goes for cut flowers (that’s why they last longer when in water with sugar mixed in). The process of the plants absorbing this nutrients is called photosynthesis. The plants gets the energy needed to do this from the sun and carbon dioxide (the stuff humans breathe out). That energy is then used to process the sugars to become stored energy. The plant then released oxygen back into the atmosphere. The entire process of the plant’s cells is called cellular respiration which is basically how cells breathe and all cells in both animals and plants do it, only in different ways.
Tips
It is suggested that the project leader has one done before the meeting so the members can see what it will look like, as it take a while to see. Also make the project so the members can take it home with them. You can do this as a smaller project with a couple of other small projects for the same day.
